The automotive industry has made significant strides in terms of diversity and inclusion over the years. One of the most exciting developments has been the growing presence of women in various automotive roles. In New Zealand, Women in Automotive is leading the charge, empowering and uplifting female professionals across the Kiwi automotive sector.

Why is This Initiative Important? The Goals and Mission of Women in Automotive NZThe Future of Women’s Roles in the Automotive Industry

In this post, we’re celebrating the work of Women in Automotive NZ. Read on to learn why this initiative is so important, how it’s supporting women’s careers, and what its goals are as the industry continues to evolve.

Why is This Initiative Important?

It’s a little-known fact that women have played a major role in shaping the automotive industry as we know it today. In fact, women invented some of the most recognisable features in modern vehicles, such as car heaters, windshield wipers, indicators, and even road markings. Despite these contributions, women remain underrepresented in the automotive sector.

As of January 2024, women make up only 17% of the automotive workforce in New Zealand, spanning roles from mechanics to sales to back-office positions. Considering that women constitute 51% of New Zealand’s population, this level of representation is notably low. Historically, women were often discouraged from entering the automotive space, which has contributed to this disparity. This is why the work of Women in Automotive NZ is so vital. By supporting women in the industry, they’re making it more accessible – not just for female employees, but also for women as consumers.

The Goals and Mission of Women in Automotive NZ

Women in Automotive NZ aims to create accessible pathways into the automotive industry for women from all backgrounds. The organisation offers mentorship programs, industry networking events, and targeted training opportunities across a wide range of roles, from mechanical servicing and repairs to sales, marketing, HR, finance, and business development.

The Future of Women’s Roles in the Automotive Industry

Women in Automotive NZ has an ambitious goal: to place up to 30,000 women in automotive industry roles within the next three years. By partnering with organisations like the Collision Repair Association, the Motor Trade Association (MTA), and Otago Polytechnic, they’re creating a clear pathway for women who want to make their mark in this field. If they achieve their goal, the automotive industry will undergo a significant transformation in the coming decade.

As gender diversity becomes a core value for more companies, more women are stepping into leadership positions, influencing the strategic direction of the industry. This shift not only benefits the companies involved but also paves the way for other women to thrive across various automotive roles.

Ultimately, this is more than just an industry shift – it’s a movement that empowers women to make a lasting impact on the automotive world.

If you’re an automotive company in New Zealand, consider pledging your support for Women in Automotive NZ. By advocating for gender diversity, offering mentorship programs, and creating inclusive hiring practices, you can help make the industry more accessible for women. With organisations like Women in Automotive NZ leading the way, the future of the industry is looking bright.
