BMW M is moving electric! Yes BMW confirmed technical specifications for its upcoming electric high-performance models. The architecture, branded as “Neue Klasse,” launches in 2027. It features a quad-motor layout and an 800-volt electrical architecture.

Engineers designed the powertrain around four individual electric motors. One motor drives each wheel. This configuration permits independent torque vectoring at all four corners. A mechanical decoupler on the front axle allows the system to disengage the front motors. This shifts the vehicle to rear-wheel drive to reduce drag during highway cruising.

The drive units position the motors in parallel. Each motor connects to a dedicated gearbox. The housing integrates the inverter and oil supply systems. This packaging aims to maximize power density.

A central vehicle dynamics controller manages the powertrain. This single unit processes data for drive control, traction management, and chassis systems. It replaces the distributed ECU architecture found in current models. The controller handles torque distribution between the friction brakes and the regenerative braking system.

The platform utilizes an 800-volt architecture to support high-speed charging. The battery pack exceeds 100kWh in usable capacity. It uses cylindrical cells. Engineers optimized the cell chemistry and cooling systems for high discharge rates and sustained peak power output.

The battery housing functions as a stressed structural member. It connects directly to the front and rear axle subframes. This increases the torsional rigidity of the chassis.

BMW will use natural fiber composites for select structural components. The company tested these materials in motorsport applications since 2019. The material exhibits mechanical properties comparable to carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) but lowers manufacturing emissions.

Software features include simulated gear shifts and synthesized motor sounds to mimic combustion engine characteristics.

Sounds exciting to me!
