A new report unveils an eye-opening analysis of the country’s highest-grossing speed cameras.

New Zealand speed camera revenue by region (2019-2023)

Using NZ police data from January 2009 to March 2024, we’ve uncovered the highest-grossing static speed cameras over the past five years, from 2019 to 2023.

This latest post sheds light on the significant impact these cameras have on both road safety and government revenue, sparking widespread discussion among Kiwi motorists.

Findings:

Speeding is a widespread issue across both urban and rural areas in New Zealand:

  • Urban Areas: Cameras in Auckland generate significant revenue, e.g., $12M from Hillsborough Road over five years. Dominion Road and Great North Road cameras also highlight frequent urban speeding.
  • Rural Areas: State Highway Two and Coatesville Riverhead Highway show high revenues too, with $9.5M and $10.7M collected respectively, indicating substantial speeding on open rural roads.

A Promising Downward Trend

Total static speed camera revenue across the country is down year on year from a whopping $55,222,240 in 2019 to a modest (if you can call it that) $29,940,390 in 2023. This downward trend is massively encouraging, not only for Kiwi drivers’ wallets but also for the safety of our roads.

NZ Police Statement

NZ Police provided a statement to us on Speed Cameras:  “Even when speed doesn’t cause the crash, it is the single biggest determinant in the outcome, whether you walk away or are carried away. A small change in speed makes a big difference in injury severity in a crash. Less speed means less harm.

Speed and travelling too fast for the conditions are contributing factors in almost all crashes, resulting in serious injury or death regardless of the cause. This is why the Police focus on speed; we know it’s one of the main contributors to death and injury on New Zealand roads. And our road safety partner, NZTA, is working alongside us in the transition of speed camera ownership and operations, while Police will continue with officer speed enforcement.”
